According to reports, Professor Gu Jianfeng’s team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Professor Ma Qian’s team from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia successfully printed a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) mechanical metamaterial with a density of 1.63 g/cubic centimeters. Its yield strength and maximum compressive strength reach 308 MPa and 417 MPa respectively.

 

Relevant research results were recently published in "Materials Today".

 

This material is lighter, stronger, and more corrosion-resistant than commercial magnesium alloys WE54 and AZ91, and is expected to find applications in aerospace, biomedicine, chemical engineering, space and energy technology, and other fields.

 

Metal mechanics metamaterials are porous metal materials composed of specific structural units arranged according to certain rules in three-dimensional space. They are also called metal lattice materials. They are a new generation of advanced lightweight and high-strength materials.

 

It is understood that magnesium alloy, as the lightest metal structural material, has a density of only 1.74g/cm², which is about 2/3 of aluminum alloy, 1/3 of zinc alloy, 1/4 of steel, and 2/5 of titanium alloy. , comparable to most engineering plastics.
