Standards for titanium rods and bars

Recently our sales feedback that many customers ask for the standards of titanium rod and bars. Some customers told our sales that it is the first time trying to use titanium and they do not know the standard for titanium and sometimes not very sure which grade of titanium they should use for their application. Considering of this condition, Etermetal would like wirte a short artical and introduce the standard and the differences. If there are any inaccuracies or ambiguities, please feel free to contact us, we will revise and update this article to help more people who need this information.

As an important metal material, titanium rods are widely used in aerospace, medical devices, chemical industry and other fields due to their unique properties of lightness, strength and corrosion resistance. For the production and application of titanium rods, there are a series of executive standards domestic and abroad to ensure their quality and applicability.

In China,  the domestic titanium bar implementation standards

GB/T 3620 series: This series is the main national standard for titanium and titanium alloy rods, which specifies in detail the chemical composition, physical properties, processing requirements of titanium rods. For example, GB/T 3620.1 specifies the grades and chemical compositions of titanium and titanium alloy bars, while GB/T 3620.2 specifies the allowable deviation of chemical composition and composition of processed products.

Other national standards: such as GB/T2965, GB/T13810, etc. These standards regulate different aspects of titanium rods, such as dimensions, tolerances, and delivery status.  GB/T 2965 is usualy used for industrial application titanium rods, while GB/T 13810 specifies titanium rods for medical application.

Overseas titanium rods executive standards

American Standard ASTM series: ASTM B348, ASME SB348, ASTM B381, ASME SB381 ,ASTM F136, ASTM F67, etc. are American standards on titanium and titanium alloys, which have clear provisions on the quality and performance of titanium rods.
Other international standards: such as AMS4928, AMS4921,AMS-T-9047, AMS 6903,  AMS6931,AMS4965,ISO5832, DIN 17860, AMS2631, AMS4981, etc. These standards also put forward specific requirements for the production and application of titanium rods.

From all of these standards, the most often used standards for industrial application are : ASTM B348, ASME SB348, ASTM B381, ASME SB381. Titanium rods and round bars meet requirements of these standards can be used for racing, petrochemical, camping, jewelry, other chemical industrial as well as other components.

For medical implant application, titanium rods and bars needs to meet standards requirements of ASTM F136, ASTM F67 , ISO 5832. ASTM F136 and ISO 5832 are specifies for GRADE 5 ELI (TI 6AL4V ELI)  titanium alloy, while ASTM F67 and ISO 5832-1, ISO5832-2 are for pure titanium.

For aerosapce use titanium the standards are AMS series.

Whether in aerospace, medical equipment or chemical industry, titanium rods play an irreplaceable role. With the progress of science and technology and the expansion of applications, the application prospect of titanium rods will be more broad.
