Compared with stainless steel or aluminum alloy, the pitting resistance of titanium is very good. Due to the increasing application of titanium in high-temperature concentrated chloride solutions, the pitting corrosion cases of titanium plates have gradually increased. Titanium anode baskets in electrolytic zinc, titanium coils heated in zinc chloride solution, and titanium products in 175°C and 72% calcium chloride solution have all experienced pitting corrosion damage. Generally speaking, pitting corrosion of titanium plates is more difficult than crevice corrosion, and crevice corrosion usually occurs in the form of pitting corrosion on the creviced surface.
Electrochemical techniques can measure the pitting potential of the metal, so as to compare the pitting tendency of the metal. If the pitting potential exceeds the rupture potential of the oxide film on the surface, the oxide film will be pitted. This should be a simple experimental method, but it is not necessarily a universal discrimination test. It is just a comparative test method.
